If you’re reading this article, it’s because you’re planning a plane trip with your baby.
But logistically, how do you manage the stroller and the plane trip ?
What do you do with the stroller when you want to take it with you? In the cabin or in the hold ?
You can choose, but not all the time.
One is always free but less accessible, and the other is not always free but more accessible ?
And yes, there are a few subtleties to be aware of.
I’ll answer them in detail !
But why me? And not yet another article ?
I’ve flown more than 10 times with my Stroller.
And in several countries, airports and airlines.
All the information you need to prepare your plane trip with your Stroller 😉
- Which airlines accept strollers in the cabin ?
- Which strollers are suitable for the cabin ?
- Do I have to pay if my Stroller goes into the hold ?
- How do I prepare for air travel with my Stroller ?
I’m going to answer all these questions right now 😉
This is me with my Stroller in Venice, Italy.
The many advantages of traveling with a stroller that fits in the airplane cabin
1/ You can be sure that your stroller will be with you when your trip arrives:
Let’s start with the worst-case scenario: your Stroller is in the hold, and when you arrive, it’s not in the luggage to be retrieved from the carpet… What can you do for your vacation? Especially in a foreign country.
With a stroller in the cabin, you’re sure to find it.
2/ Greater comfort for your baby at the airport :
Why ?
Because if your Stroller goes into the hold, you won’t be able to use it while you wait between check-in and boarding…
You’ll have to keep your baby with you, so he won’t be in the comfort of his beautiful Stroller.
the Stroller is considered as your only carry-on baggage.
3/ No extra baggage fees
Travelling with a compact stroller as hand luggage also saves you money.
Why should you ?
Most airlines offer the stroller as checked baggage, but only up to the age of 2. After two years:
- Either your folded stroller is the airline’s regulated size, and will therefore be YOUR hand luggage.
- Otherwise, you’ll have to pay a baggage supplement.
So with a cabin-approved stroller, you’ll be able to take it with you free of charge at all times, even when your baby is over two years old. The only downside is that you’ll have to replace your hand luggage with your Stroller.
For a stroller to fit in the cabin, it’s the folded size that counts !
For a stroller to be accepted as carry-on baggage, you need to :
- It can be folded
- It must not exceed the dimensions authorized as carry-on baggage by the airline.
In most cases, the stroller will replace your carry-on baggage.
However, dimensions vary from airline to airline.
⚠️ BUT, don’t be fooled by the dimensions shown, and don’t forget the diagonal! ⚠️
What’s he talking about ?
Let me explain with an example
For example, for the YOYO, its dimensions don’t work for AIR FRANCE, even though I can assure you that the stroller was indeed in the plane’s cabin compartment, and above all… there’s a special YOYO Air France edition…
With the marketing argument that it fits in the cabin!
⚠️Donc, do you think there’s a problem ? ⚠️
Well, no. In fact, the stroller can be placed diagonally in the baggage sizer and then it’s wide enough for the cabin 😉 (Pythagoras, you’ll remember).
Exactly the width of the YOYO.
⚡So to make sure your compact stroller or cane will fit in the cabin on 95% of airlines without paying, make sure it doesn’t exceed these dimensions: ⚡
- 55 cm in length
- 45 cm wide
- 24 cm in height
