How to take your Stroller to the beach ?

Beach stroller

The sun is shining and you’re already imagining yourself by the sea, soaking up the sun.

But now, for the past few months, you’ve been happy parents again, with the arrival of your baby in your daily life.

For months now, you’ve been used to driving your stroller around town in your own home.

But then the vacations came.

How do you go to the beach with a 1-month, 2-month or 3-month-old baby at any age ?

Especially when we have a stroller ?

I live near the sea ;).

I’m sharing with you my experiences as a dad who has been to several beaches in several countries (Italy, Greece and Spain).

And this is true from baby’s very first months.

How to choose the right stroller for the beach ?

There are two things to bear in mind when choosing a stroller for the beach.

  • Large wheels: Choose a stroller with large, sturdy wheels, designed to roll easily over sand without getting stuck.
  • Light stroller weight: To prevent the stroller from sinking into the sand due to excessive weight.

Either one of the two factors, or both.

Although the weight of the stroller is a major factor.

I’ve seen friends with big strollers with all-terrain wheels sink into wet sand.

It’s impossible for them to get to the water’s edge with their Stroller… It’s a shame when you live by the sea every day.

I’m going to tell you about my stroller in particular, as well as the models I also come across at sea.

There must also be other models that can run on sand, but here are the ones I know 😉 and have seen in action.

Not sure which Stroller to choose ?

I invite you to read below about my magic accessory that makes all strollers roll on sand 😉

The YOYO Babyzen beach stroller

I’ve had a YOYO Babyzen stroller for over 3 years, and despite its small wheels, it’s never got bogged down in the sand.

Why ?

Because the Stroller is ultra-light.

I’ve never sunk with the YOYO on any of my beach outings.

Thanks to this stroller for being so perfect.

The Kinderkraft MOOV beach stroller

Large all-terrain wheels perfect for riding on sand.

The Stroller makes it impossible to sink into the sand.

I often see them with me at the beach.

The Kinderkraft GRANDE PLUS beach stroller

Big all-terrain wheels, perfect for riding on sand, like the other Kinderkraft model.

A lower price, but with less scalability.

The CASSY Compact Stroller for the beach

Small wheels, but like the YOYO.

And just as light, the Stroller will never sink into the sand with so little weight.

I can only agree 😉

The Maxi-Cosi Lara² stroller for the beach

Double small wheels for perfect stability and less weight distribution on the wheels.

As a result, it doesn’t sink into the sand at sea.

Never underestimate double wheels 😉

What accessories are recommended for a beach stroller ?

How can I protect my baby from the sun and sand while using a stroller at the beach ?

Now that we’ve seen how to choose the right stroller for the sea, you’ll also need the right accessories.

Essential accessories for a great day at the beach with your baby.

The worst enemies for your baby at the beach are :

  • Sun and UV
  • Sand irritates baby’s sensitive skin
  • Heat

If one of them is present during your stroll on the beach with your stroller, then your afternoon will be ruined.

Here are a few universal stroller accessories you can add to your Stroller for a lovely afternoon at the seaside.

Anti-UV Stroller Sun shade cover

Depending on the model of your Stroller, you may or may not have a canopy.

But despite the canopy on this model, baby won’t be fully covered from head to toe and therefore protected from UV rays.

Fortunately, engineers have come up with UV protection that covers the entire stroller.

Its protective covers can be fitted to both a conventional stroller and a baby bassinet.

With the anti-UV sun shade cover on the Stroller, your baby will be protected from the sun’s rays all afternoon long.

Anti-UV parasol for Stroller

The stroller parasol covers less surface area than the sun shade cover, but its great advantage is that it can be tilted vertically and horizontally, so you can block the sun in any position.

Choose a universal parasol for strollers, i.e. one that can be installed on all strollers worldwide.

In just 5 seconds, your baby will be protected from the sun’s rays.

The cooling mattress

No more swimming babies !

Thanks to airy, absorbent materials, cooling mattresses offer a peaceful, cool ride.

Lightweight and easy to install, they fit all strollers, allowing you to set off on your adventures with complete peace of mind.

When baby takes a nap on the beach in the stroller, he’ll be kept cool in his Stroller.

The portable stroller fan

Baby stroller fan installed on the stroller frame

A very practical accessory when there’s no air at the beach.

With just one click, baby will have some fresh air all to himself ;).

This accessory has saved my life several times, as it can be attached anywhere: on the stroller or on a cot.

Stroller racing net

My worst enemy at the beach is sand; it gets into my stroller, car and clothes.

That’s why I usually bring along a stroller racing net.

A mesh bag that hangs anywhere on your Stroller.

With this net :

  • No sand (as it will fall through the mesh)
  • And it’s very practical for carrying all your baby’s toys.

Universal Stroller Skis

And yes, you’re not dreaming: universal skis for strollers, and especially for the beach.

Several brands offer universal stroller skis, which can be fitted to all brands of stroller wheels.

With these beach skis on the front wheels of your Stroller, despite small wheels or heavy weight, the stroller will never sink.

So you can make the most of seaside strolls with your Stroller.

A great tip that very few parents know about 😉

Ideal if you’ve already bought a stroller and you’re not sure whether you’ll be able to drive it on sand.

The beach wagon instead of the stroller

Here’s the alternative to a stroller for the sandy seaside.

Introducing the beach wagon, an ideal accessory for transporting both children and all your accessories for a lovely afternoon at the beach.

Why opt for a beach wagon rather than a stroller ?

  1. Greater carrying capacity: Beach wagons are generally designed to carry beach equipment, toys, towels and other bulky items. Their carrying capacity is often greater than that of a stroller, making them an ideal choice for families with young children and lots of luggage.
  2. Stability and sturdiness on the sand: Beach wagons are equipped with wider, sturdier wheels, specially designed for navigating on sand. They offer greater stability and superior traction than strollers, making them more suitable for the sandy, uneven surface of the beach.
  3. Versatility of use: As well as serving as a means of transport for children, beach wagons can also be used to carry coolers, umbrellas, beach chairs and other equipment. Their versatile design makes them a practical choice for a day at the beach.
  4. Ease of cleaning: Beach wagons are often made from easy-to-clean materials such as plastic or aluminum, making them simple to maintain after a day at the beach. Unlike strollers, which can accumulate sand and dirt in creases and crevices, beach wagons can be quickly rinsed and cleaned.

Do I need an all-terrain stroller for the beach ?

beach stroller

The answer is no.

I’ve seen all-terrain strollers stuck in the sand because they’re too heavy !

You’ll need a stroller that’s either :

  • With a weight as light as a YOYO
  • and if possible with large wheels.

The most important thing is the weight of the Stroller.

How to maintain and clean your Stroller after a day at the beach ?

After a day at the beach, it’s important to clean and maintain your Stroller to preserve its durability and ensure your baby’s comfort and safety on future outings. Here are a few simple steps to maintain and clean your Stroller after a day at the beach:

  1. Shake off sand and coarse dirt: Before you start cleaning, gently shake the stroller to remove as much sand and dirt as possible. Concentrate on areas where sand has accumulated, such as the wheels and fabric folds.
  2. Remove removable fabrics: If your stroller has removable fabrics such as seat covers or cushions, remove them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This will facilitate cleaning and allow access to hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap: Use a sponge or soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water and mild soap to clean the surfaces of the Stroller, including the frame, wheels and fabrics. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals that could damage materials.
  4. Rinse thoroughly and dry: After cleaning, rinse all surfaces thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. Then leave the Stroller to air-dry in the shade. Make sure all parts are completely dry before reassembling or storing the Stroller.
  5. Check folding mechanisms and wheels: Take this opportunity to inspect the stroller’s folding mechanisms, wheels and brakes. Clean the wheels to remove any sand or dirt that could affect their operation, and make sure all mechanisms are working properly.
  6. Apply corrosion protection (optional): If your stroller is exposed to seawater, you may want to consider applying a corrosion protector to the metal parts to prevent rust and long-term corrosion.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your Stroller clean, functional and ready for your next beach adventure with your baby.

To sum up quickly on the guide to a stroller at the beach:

beach stroller
  • Choose a beach wagon instead of a stroller.
  • Otherwise, opt for a lightweight stroller with large wheels, if possible. The most important thing is the weight of the stroller.
  • And last but not least, opt for UV and heat protection accessories such as parasols or sun shade covers for strollers.

But by the way,
Who am I ?

“I am a 30-year-old young dad,

embarking on the beautiful adventure of parenthood,

and a proud owner of two YOYO strollers for over 3 years.

They accompany me and my children daily in all our adventures.”
